What the milestones mean
Toolchain Uploaded: the compilers and build tools for the new release go into the archive first, so the rest of the system can be built on top of them.
Ubuntu Testing Weeks: optional community testing rounds, planned for 24 December 2026 and 4 March 2027. The schedule notes that they replace the old Alpha and Beta 1 milestones and are organised ad hoc.
Feature Freeze and Debian Import Freeze: from 25 February 2027, new features need a special exception, and Ubuntu stops automatically pulling new packages from Debian. The focus moves from adding things to fixing them.
User Interface Freeze: from 18 March, the look and wording of the desktop should stop changing, so documentation and screenshots can be finished.
Documentation String Freeze and Kernel Feature Freeze: on 25 March, help text is locked for translators, and the kernel stops taking new features.
Beta Freeze and Hardware Enablement Freeze: on Monday, 29 March, the archive is frozen to prepare the Beta, and support for new hardware should be in place.
Beta: the 1 April 2027 Beta is the one mandatory test milestone. It is the best time for brave users to try 27.04 and report bugs.
Kernel Freeze and Final Freeze: the kernel is locked on 8 April. On 15 April comes Final Freeze along with the Release Candidate, which should be very close to the final build. Translation deadlines fall on 8 April (non language pack) and 15 April (language packs).
Final Release: Ubuntu 27.04 is due on 22 April 2027.
What to expect in Ubuntu 27.04
Early days: the official schedule does not list features, and the archive-wide “disruptive activities” table is still empty. So far, there is no official feature list for 27.04.
One big project to watch: Canonical has restarted work on Ubuntu Core Desktop, an immutable, all-snap version of Ubuntu, and plans daily test images over the coming weeks. Read our full story on Canonical reviving Ubuntu Core Desktop for what that means for you.
Should you install Ubuntu 27.04 now?
Not on your main PC: Ubuntu 27.04 is in early development, and things will break along the way. Wait for the Beta on 1 April if you want to test it, and use a spare machine or a virtual machine.
Want something newer today? Ubuntu 26.10 is the latest stable release. Our guide on how to upgrade to Ubuntu 26.10 from 26.04 LTS walks you through it.
