KDE Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary with the Release of KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS

Today, October 4, 2016, the KDE project was proud to unveil the newest and most advanced release of its popular, modern, and free desktop environment for GNU/Linux distributions.

KDE Plasma 5.8 has been in development for the past few months, it’s a major release with numerous new features, and it comes as a drop-in replacement for the Plasma 5.7 series, which reached end of life on September 13, 2016 with the KDE Plasma 5.7.5 maintenance update. Best of all, KDE Plasma 5.8 is an LTS (Long Term Support) branch that will receive point releases until 2018.

Prominent new features of KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS include support for desktop widgets, a new system-wide search functionality that promises to let users easily search their KDE desktops for everything they want, including apps, music, videos, files, folders, etc., a new tool to get hot new stuff for your KDE Plasma desktop, such as wallpapers, widgets, desktop effects, or window styles, and infinite customization possib… (read more)
